👋 Exchange Year Experience
🩺 During my exchange year, I had a surgery after an accident while skiing in Austria. I was the only one who had surgery during the exchange.
🌍 I went to Germany, specifically Berlin, for six months through the YFU program. The application process varies by country, but in Turkey, it was quite straightforward.
💰 Scholarships are available, but for six-month programs, there are typically no scholarships, so plan accordingly.
😔 Being an exchange student can be challenging. The feeling of being alone in a different culture can be tough, especially if you're not used to it.
🏥 I had to use crutches for three to four months post-surgery, but I viewed the experience positively, as it provided insight into the patient experience.
🤝 Communication with your host family is crucial. I was lucky to have a supportive host family, but many students struggle with their host families.
🇩🇪 Making friends in Germany can be difficult as the culture is more reserved compared to others. Be prepared to feel alone at times.
📚 Language can be a barrier. Despite my good German skills, understanding native speakers and slang was challenging. Regular practice is essential.
🍽️ Food culture varies; my host family cooked well, but many exchange students reported eating mostly bread. Be open to new foods.
🌱 An exchange year can change you significantly. You may return home feeling different, and your friends and family might not understand your growth.
✨ Overall, an exchange year is an incredible experience that broadens your perspective and teaches you about different cultures. I highly recommend it!
👋 Thank you for watching! I hope you consider going for an exchange and have an amazing year!
